ViSPAGI is a German biotechnology startup revolutionizing cancer diagnostics through artificial intelligence. Founded by Dr. Özdemir Cetin and Ahmed Elshamanhory, who have been researching and working together for over three years, the company aims to significantly reduce the time required for a diagnosis from weeks to just minutes. This acceleration promises to alleviate the psychological burden on patients and enable earlier, more effective treatments. The core of ViSPAGI's technology is a process called virtual staining. Traditionally, tissue samples (biopsies) must undergo a lengthy chemical staining process to make different cell structures visible under a microscope for a pathologist to analyze. ViSPAGI replaces this chemical-intensive and time-consuming procedure with proprietary AI algorithms that digitally generate the necessary color contrast on tissue images. This software-based approach not only provides speed but also enhances safety by eliminating the use of potentially hazardous chemicals for patients and medical staff. The final diagnosis is still made by a human pathologist, but the virtual staining tool helps them interpret the images more efficiently. ViSPAGI's business model involves providing its software to medical professionals, which can be run on conventional laptops, even within an operating room. This makes advanced diagnostics accessible without requiring expensive, specialized hardware. The platform is designed to be fully GDPR compliant, ensuring that no patient images or data leave the clinic, which maintains data privacy and security. The company serves the digital pathology market, offering a solution to a significant problem in laboratory workflows. Unlike other AI systems trained to directly identify cancer from images, ViSPAGI functions as a tool to enhance the pathologist's workflow rather than an automated diagnostic tool. The startup is a product of research conducted at the Technical University of Darmstadt and has been developed in collaboration with leading pathologists at the University Hospital Frankfurt.
